Unboxing the Galaxy S24 Plus And First Look – Beautiful And Convincing So Far

At the beginning of every year, Samsung would launch its new flagship S-series phone and this year was no different with the imminent launch of the S24 series. With the slogan “Galaxy AI is here,” this new model is made to empower its users in various areas with some convenient built-in features, made possible by the power of AI.

But while I’m excited to talk about all the new features and hardware that the S24 Plus comes with, that territory is better suited for an in-depth review. For now, let’s unbox the phone and take a good look at what the phone carries in its flagship arsenal

    What’s in the box

The S24 Plus comes with the standard kit. You get the S24 Plus phone itself, a sim-eject pin, and a Type-C charging cable. Samsung has always opted for minimalistic packaging of their phones, flagship models included and prefers to let their product do the talking.

    Price List

    256GB | 12GB RM 4,899
    512GB | 12GB RM 5,399 (Promotion Now for only RM 4,899)

There’s actually a pretty sweet deal at the time of writing. You can get the 512GB model for the price of the 256GB but this is a time offer. You can find out more on Samsung’s website.

    Design and build

    The S24 Plus measures 158.5mm x 75.9mm x 7.7mm, or 6.24 x 2.99 x 0.30 inches. Dimension-wise. The S24 Plus is almost identical to the older S23 Plus model from last year, and both phones weigh 196g which isn’t heavy for today’s standard. The bigger-sized S24 Ultra weighs 232g and has a dimension of 162.3mm x 79mm x 8.6mm in comparison.

    Model Dimension and weight
    S24 Ultra 162.3mm x 79mm x 8.6mm (232gram)
    S24 Plus 158.5mm x 75.9mm x 7.7mm (196gram)
    S24 147mm x 70.6mm x 7.6mm (167gram)

On the aesthetic side, the ‘Amber Yellow’ variant we received from Samsung is an absolute beaut. The phone also comes in other colours like the Onyx Black, Marble Grey, Cobalt Violet, Jade Green, Sandstone Orange, and Sapphire Blue.

It’s worth noting that the Jade Green, Sandstone Orange, and Sapphire Blue variants are Samsung.com exclusive colours for those who order the phone from the website only.

The front display panel and the phone’s backplate are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The phone’s body is wrapped in an Armor Aluminium 2.0 frame that promises tougher drop and scratch resistance. But as we always advise you here, this is just what they say so don’t go around challenging your new phone on purpose. It’s not worth it.

The phone is rated with an IP68 rating, protecting the phone against dust and water (water resistant up to 1.5m for 30 minutes only). There is no external memory slot which isn’t a surprise.

Battery-wise, the S24 Plus packs a 4,900mAh battery (the S23+ had 4,700mAh), which is just 100mAh shy of the 5,000mAh battery the S24 Ultra carries. The S24 base model carries a noticeably smaller battery of 4,000mAh.

The S24 Plus charges on 45W Wired where it can supposedly hit 65% in 30 minutes in their marketing material. But we’ll confirm this number in our in-depth review coming soon. On the wireless charging side, the phone charges at 15W via Qi/PMA, and reverse wireless charging at 4.5W.

    Spec

The device comes packed with the latest Android 14, One UI 6.1, and carries an Exynos 2400 (4nm) chip in Malaysia. For those in the USA, Canada, and China, the S24 Plus comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 instead. The phone is available in two variants – 256GB and 512GB, but both are armed with 12GB RAM.

For the display screen, the phone has a 6.7” Dynamic LPTO AMOLED 2X display offering a vivid and detailed QHD+ resolution (1,440 x 3,120 pixels), similar to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The display has an adaptive refresh rate from 1-120Hz and a brightness level of 2600 nits (peak), the brightest adaptive mobile display on a Galaxy device so far.

In the camera department, the S24 Plus has the same package as the base S24 model. Both carry a primary 50MP wide (f/1.8), 10MP telephoto optical zoom (f/2.4), and a 12MP ultrawide (f/2,2). They can record videos up to UHD 8K @ 24/30 FPS as well as 4K @ 30/60 FPS, or 1080p @ 30/60/240 FPS. Slow-mo shots can be taken on 1080p @ 960fps.

The selfie camera carries a 12MP wide (f/2,2) lens with Auto-HDR and HDR10+ features. You can record videos up to 4K @ 30/60 FPS here if you want.

On the sound section, the phone carries the standard stereo speakers capable of 32-bit/384kHz audio tuned by AKG.

    Looking good so far

On paper, everything about the Galaxy S24 Plus spells awesome. It’s beautiful and convincing. With the new Exynos 2400 chipset, the promising Dynamic LPTO AMOLED display, a 12GB build and a bigger juice pack of 4,900mAh, the Galaxy S24 Plus looks like an amazing phone ready for the long haul.

But that’s just on paper. We’ll take it for a ride and see how it really fares in handling real-world challenges. So, stay tuned for our full review of the device.
