Sony certainly build up high expectations through a tech deep-dive and the DualSense 5 reveal. However, according to a report from Bloomberg, Sony will be producing far less units in the first year. When considering the giant corp’s track record, this is rather baffling.
The Playstation 4 sold more than 1 million units within 24 hours of its launch and another 2.1 million with its global launch. So it comes as a surprise when they are limiting productions for the Playstation 5 despite the increasing demand.
One may immediately think that the global COVID-19 pandemic may be the root reason of the decision. However, that may not seem to be the case. According to Bloomberg’s sources, the pandemic only affects the promotional plans but does not dampen the production capacity. Furthermore, the Playstation 5 is a highly ambitious console with specs that requires costly parts. This will likely to push the console’s price up a notch compared to its predecessor.
That said, the higher price may incur some losses to Sony as well as lower early adopters. However, given to its limited nature, some may go all the way to secure one. Hence, it may not be much of a loss and might be a boost for Sony.
Considering the end of the pandemic is not in sight yet, only time can tell on how things will play out for Sony. The Playstation 5 is reportedly starting its mass production this coming June but many of its information are yet to be revealed. So it seems that Sony wants to play their cards right. With such a manner of secrecy, it is without a doubt Sony wants to break new grounds. As gamers, this means there is indeed something new to look forward to.
