Review : Oppo F11 Pro – A midrange phone with gaming capability

Launched on the 12th of March 2019, the Oppo F11 Pro is the latest model in the F Series. Equipped with a 48mp dual rear and a pop-up selfie camera, this device is marketed with the tagline “Brilliant portrait in low light”.

Alright, nuff said about the phone’s camera. We’re here to review it from the gaming perspective.

What is Hyper Boost and how it relates to gaming?

Similar to their competitors, Hyper Boost is a performance acceleration engine at system level. According to Oppo, Hyper Boost enhances app performances by arranging proper resource usage as needed; hence improving user experience. On top of that, there are 11 games in the market which have been optimized to perform better on Hyper Boost including PUBG and Arena of Valor. Here’s a video on how Hyper Boost works

    Hands-On Performance

As with all system level enhancement engines, we couldn’t test any games with this feature switched off(or on) for comparison. Despite that, we played a few rounds of PUBG and Honkai Impact for some hands-on experience. From what we’ve observed, the games do perform better when loaded through Game Space with the High Performance setting switched on.

Although we were limited to HD settings on PUBG, the overall experience was pretty decent with stable frame rates. The heat dissipation on this device is rather impressive as well as it remained lukewarm even after three hours of gaming.

    Screen

Forget punch hole screens. The screen on the F11 Pro is a 6.5-inch notch free, hole-less, bezel-less in design. We used to find notch screens a pain when it comes to gaming, especially when the display gets resized to hide the notch. With a slightly different implementation of Oppo Find X’s pop-out selfie camera design, they’ve finally gotten rid of that pesky notch from the F series and didn’t go down the path of a punch hole design (thank you Oppo!).

The only drawback is the LCD display, which is not as stunning as an AMOLED display but still good nonetheless.

    Summary

Priced at RM1,299.00, the Oppo F11 Pro is an affordable mid-range smartphone that is built for gaming. Although it’s not the best in its class, it is a worthy contender against other smartphones in the same price range and spec sheet.
